Employment Law: Worker Rights Explained

Spending 40 hours a week somewhere shouldn't feel like a prison sentence. Whether you're a boss or a worker bee, knowing the rules keeps the hive humming happily.

The Holy Contract

In Estonia, if it's not written down, it (mostly) didn't happen. Verbal contracts are a nightmare. Here is your "Must-Have" checklist before you sign on the dotted line:

Employment Contract Essentials

  • Job Duties: What exactly will you do?
  • Salary: Gross vs Net. Know the difference!
  • Location: Office, home, or "anywhere"?
  • Working Hours: Full-time means 40h/week.

Vacation: The Holy Grail

Estonians love their summer. By law, you get 28 calendar days of paid vacation per year. That's 4 weeks of freedom!

Annual Vacation (Legal Standard)
28 Days
Standard Resignation Notice
30 Days
Probation Period Notice
15 Days

Firing & Quitting

Can you be fired on the spot? Rare. Can you quit on the spot? Also rare (usually 30 days notice).

Probation Period

Usually 4 months. Easier to fire, easier to quit (15 days notice). It's a trial run for both sides.

Envelope Wages

NEVER accept cash-in-hand salary. You lose health insurance, pension, and unemployment benefits. It's not worth it.
